Teacher Professional Development
Highlighting Writing presents one of the top speakers in Australian and the USA - Jen McVeity.
Jen McVeity could well be called a human dynamo. She has written
over 23 books, is a Churchill Fellow, was State runner-up Speaker of the Year, is the current international Chair of the Society of Children's
Book writers and Illustrators (the largest writing organisation in the world) - and she flies on a circus trapeze for fun!
In 2005, over 94% of participants rated the Seven Steps workshops as 'inspiring', 'practical' or 'outstanding'.
'I was enthralled and in awe of Jen's wonderful talent. It takes and
excellent presentation to excite me and I was EXCITED!'
Jen's programs include:
Seven Steps to Writing Success (Full Day training)
The Seven Steps program is so practical and easy to learn, teachers can take it straight back
to the classroom the very next day. Show your students:
- How to write five terrific story starts in five minutes
- Top author 'cheats' to make dialogue sound terrific
- A 'story graph' guide to solve all those planning problems
- Ways to use body language to 'show, not tell' (including great flirting gestures!)
- A ten minute exercise guaranteed to create edge-of-the-seat tension scenes
- A fantastic way to get rid of 'all the boring bits…'
- How to brainstorm a hundred story ideas in ten minutes!
An action packed workshop that is rated as 'outstanding' or similar by over 94% of participants.
Top Three Steps to Writing Success (2 hr workshop)
Expert, interactive and amazingly easy to implement, these are the top three techniques that
will change students' writing from boring to brilliant in just a few lessons! Discover how your students can:
- Plan for Success - and brainstorm a hundred story ideas
- Create Sizzling Starts - and write five fabulous starts in five minutes
- Team up for Tension scenes - and add real excitement to their writing.
More action and fast moving activities, based on Steps 1-3 of the Seven Steps.
Final Four Steps to Writing Success (2 hr workshop)
By popular demand, (from those who have graduated from the Top Three Steps) we now bring
you the other four steps in a short workshop. So here they are:
- Dialogue - learn the four levels of conversation and which one is the most dynamic
- Show, Don't Tell - actions (and great body language) make writing totally convincing
- Ban the boring - you'll never have to read what kids ate on the bus again
- Endings - discover how to replace 'and then I woke up' with powerful endings.
Editing for Excellence (2 hr workshop)
Give kids great ways to improve their stories AND cut down on your marking time. (Yes it can be done!)
You get a terrific Seven Steps marking guideline that makes editing quick and easy. There
are samples of kid's work being edited along with great 'before and after' examples. Discover how to edit student's work (not just fix the spelling) by telling them TWO good points about
the work - then ONE way it could be improved. Plus be inspired by rough drafts of author's manuscripts which show exactly how they edit - it's real 'slash and burn' stuff.
There's even a fascinating exercise with a paperclip which shows how the creative mind works
- and how you can maximize creativity in your classroom.
